Don't Skip Breakfast!

Are you one of those people who skips breakfast? Many people do, be it because they believe it will help them lose weight or because they don't have time to make it or because they have just lived that way for a while and it has just become a habit.

But skipping breakfast can lower you blood sugar, causing you to be less alert in the mornings and putting your body into starvation mode so that it overcompensates for the loss when you have lunch. What this means is that it will take the calories from lunch and store them as fat, causing you to gain more weight than before. In the end, skipping meals causes more weight gain, and you may find yourself being more frustrated than before.

So look at your 3 meal a day plan and try to stick to it.

Some of you may say "I don't have time to eat breakfast. I gotta get the kids up for school and do this and that and it's all i can do to grab a cereal bar on the way out."

Everybody has priorities, and oftentimes we can put ourselves as last on the list. But put yourself first. You deserve a good breakfast, and you need it to be alert when you drive or when you have to make decisions on the job. The time it takes to eat a good breakfast of hardy cereal is 15 minutes. Give yourself those 15 minutes, even if you have to wake up   earlier before the rest of the family.

What are the best things to have for breakfast? Hardy cereals with fibre in them like Shredded Wheat or Shreddies are really good: since it takes fiber longer to digest, it fills you up and gives your stomach something to work on until lunchtime. You can also have scrambled eggs. Foods like  fruit or whole wheat toast are really side dishes. I've known a lot of people who have had nothing but fruit for breakfast but in the end. fruit is just water and nutrients. You need fibre or protein to fill you up at breakfast. Something with hudspah!

One thing I don't recommend at breakfast time is food that has a high sugar content. Foods like Poptarts, Fruit Loops, toaster strudel or danishes can just set the tone for more sugar cravings during the day. If eating such foods has become a habit for you that you don't think you can get rid of it, just try supplementing it wth a high fiber cereal and gradually introducing healthier foods into your diet.

Making breakfast one of the most important meals of the day will do wonders for your health, your mood, and your life.

Bon appetit!
